Episode Three: Jeremy Wheatley
November 17th
Straight outta Washington (Georgia)
2009
Jeremy Wheatley grew up listening to his father’s country records and Casey Kasem’s Top 40. A drummer since his tenth Christmas, his first gig came from ousting a member of his older brother’s classic rock cover band. Eventually becoming a student at the University of Georgia, he majored in performance percussion, though his roommates initially discouraged a formal education in music.
Years later, Jeremy still finds himself immersed in the Athens music scene, simultaneously involved with numerous groups like Tin Cup Prophette, Liz Durrett, and Je Suis France (to be pronounced with the utmost American accent). His latest endeavor is a solo album, which will, if there is any justice in the world, make him famous.
With all his touring and recording, it is surprising to discover that Jeremy continues to have ties to his alma mater, working as an academic advisor to Franklin College students at the University of Georgia. His charming and relaxed demeanor must certainly come in handy with all the projects that he juggles.
In this episode: Lee Dorsey, Jeremy Wheatley, Fionn Regan, Sam Cooke, Liz Durett, Lisa Gerrard, Van Morrison, Townes Van Zandt.
Next episode: Allison Weiss, singer-songwriter, on her way from open-mic at Hot Corner to the lights of NYC.
