Episode Two: Andy Gonzales
October 09th
A phantastic gentleman of substance
2009
Andy Gonzales is a native of Denver who, like so many others, moved to Athens to play music. Over the last decade he has played in Elephant Six bands like Of Montreal and the Music Tapes, recorded excellent records with his own band Marshmallow Coast, toured Europe and North America, recorded a joint album with Derek Almstead of Elf Power under the banner of M Coast, played with his wife Sara as Andy From Denver, and has started performing with and producing Athens hip hop artist Simple Teek. He is awfully calm for a person who gets that much done.
Andy is one of those musicians that writers call a "multi-instrumentalist," meaning that the list of instruments he does play would take up too many column inches, and the ones he doesn't play are a few weeks of practice away from making that first list. Listening to the new Marshmallow Coast record, Phreak Phantasy, you can hear Andy's knack for pop hooks, his attraction to the psychedelic and fantastical, and the oddball imagination that characterizes his body of work.
In this episode: Marshmallow Coast, Andy Gonzales, Erik Satie, Chromeo, Rachel's, Simple Teek, Manos Hadjidakis.
Next episode: Jeremy Wheatley, solo artist and drummer for Liz Durrett, Tin Cup Prophette, and Je Suis France (pronounced Ju-Swee-Frantz, by the way).
